Presenting: Church in the Inventive Age

It’s an exciting time here at sparkhouse! We recently launched our first book, Doug Pagitt’s Church in the Inventive Age, and are thrilled with all the positive feedback it’s been receiving.  Doug is the founder of Solomon’s Porch, a holistic missional Christian community in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and one of the pioneering leaders of Emergent Village, a social network of Christians around the world.

As Doug explains it, in the last 200 years, American culture has moved through three distinct ages—the Agrarian Age, the Industrial Age, and the Information Age—and is heavily engaged in a fourth—an era he has dubbed the Inventive Age.

The Inventive Age presents distinct opportunities for how faith communities think, what they value, and the tools they use. This is the age of ownership and customization and user-created content, where churches are required to step outside the box and find new ways to engage their congregations.  What a great time to be a part of a faith community!

Tell us how is your church moving into the Inventive Age. We’d love to hear your feedback!

According to Pagitt, the last two centuries can be divided into four epochs: Idyllic, Industrial, Informational and now-Inventive. The Inventive Age – our currently reality – presents distinct opportunities for how faith communities think, what they value, and the tools they use.
